Immortelle sandy (tsmin)

Sand immortelle flowers

The sand immortelle, a perennial herbaceous plant, has many other names. It is also called cumin, dried flower, sandy golden flower or straw color.

It got its name due to the fact that the scales around the inflorescence of this plant do not fade and do not change their color after cutting. The name "solar gold" is also common among the people. The plant belongs to the Aster family, the genus Immortelle.

Titles in other languages:

  • lat. Helichrusum italicum;
  • fr. Italienische Strohblume.

Appearance

  • The immortelle has a straight single stem up to 60 centimeters high. Since the plant is completely hairy, this gives it a silvery hue.
  • Its rhizome is short and thick, with a small number of branches, black-brown in color. If the plant grows on light soil that drains well, the rhizome is thinner - up to 4 mm.
  • The leaves are pubescent, arranged alternately. Below and near the root they are narrowed, and in the middle and above the plants are linear or lanceolate. Their edges are often wrapped down.
  • Flowers appear at the tops of the stems. Baskets collected in shields have a spherical shape and a diameter of up to 6 mm. They consist of several dozen small orange or yellow flowers.
  • The fruit of the sand immortelle is a small oblong achene weighing up to 0.06 grams. Its color is brown or brown. On the achene there is a tuft of soft yellow hairs.
  • The plant blooms in summer, and ripening begins in August. Sometimes you can observe a secondary flowering in late summer or September. It can also be when the inflorescences are plucked. First, baskets bloom in the center, each of them blooms for about 10-15 days.

spice making method

Immortelle flowers are harvested to obtain medicinal raw materials. You need to cut them in June / July until the moment when the side baskets bloom. If the cutting time is later, the baskets will open and the flowers will fall off. In one place, the inflorescences are collected several times - as they bloom every 5-7 days.

The collected flowers must be dried in a shady room that is ventilated. They are laid out in a layer up to three centimeters. You can also put the raw materials in the dryer, setting the temperature to +40 degrees. Do not dry cumin flowers in the sun or they will discolor. Dry flowers should be stored in a dark place for up to 3 years.

When harvesting raw materials in the forest zone, make sure that the cat's paw, which is distinguished by white or pink inflorescences, does not come across.
